Attached is a list of a few hotels near the Summer Sizzle site.  All are less than three miles from the church.  An address, Web site and phone number is listed for each hotel.  This is just a selection; more are nearby, if none of these are suitable for you.

More Summer Sizzle News

Attached is an updated registration form for the Sep. 25 Summer Sizzle event.  The old one will still be fine for solo and workshop registration.  The new form, on its last page, includes information and sign-up for the evening ceilidh and informal concert.

Scheduled for 8 p.m. in the church's beautiful old sanctuary, the ceilidh is an opportunity for pipers and drummers to play just for fun and personal satisfaction, without the pressures of competition and evaluation.  Participants may play solo or in ensemble, and music on any instrument is welcome.  Celtic-themed music is especially welcome, but suitable music of any type may be played.  There is no cost, and you may play as many tunes as you wish.  You may also play both solo and ensemble if you wish.  Food and drink may be provided (we're looking into it now).

If you'd like a piper or drummer to accompany you, but don't have one lined up, please indicate that on the form and return it to us ASAP.  We'll do our best to connect you with someone so that you can exchange music and prepare.

We strongly encourage everyone to join in and participate, or at least to listen.  It will help us very much if you let us know, when you register, that you will join in, so that we have an idea of who will attend and can make a rough schedule.

Nominations Due for EUSPBA Executive Committee

This is the last week to submit nominees for the EUSPBA Executive Committee.  The offices up for election are (visit euspba.org/about-contact to see slate of current officers):

Also, please send in your nominations for Southwest Branch Officer At Large Two and any proposals to be considered at the Branch meeting before forwarding on to the EUSPBA AGM on Nov. 13, 2010.

St. Thomas Episcopal At The Worlds

Congratulations to the St. Thomas Episcopal pipe band on their 3rd place finish in the Juvenile grade at the World Championships today.  They also enjoyed great success at various competitions in Scotland in the weeks preceding the Worlds.

The EUSPBA was well-represented this year. Other member bands competing at the Worlds included Grandfather Mountain Highlanders, Oran Mor, City of Washington, Saffron United, and Northcoast (4th in 4a).

Summer Sizzle location

As Nancy noted, the 2010 Summer Sizzle will be hosted at the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Farmers Branch, a suburb of Dallas on the north side of the city.  It is a lovely, traditional church building that will suit us well.  Almost 20 hotels are within 3 miles of the church, so attendees have a wide variety of lodging choices. Please let me know if you need assistance with accomodations.

We've attracted several more sponsors this year than last, so we'll be able to offer more prizes in addition to competition medals.

Please submit your registration as soon as possible.  Just as important, let Nancy or I know very soon if you would like to schedule a private lesson with Chris Apps or Jon Quigg for Friday evening, 9/25.  Time slots will be limited and could fill up quickly.

We're planning a Saturday evening ceilidh, and encourage you to stay for that and play for the group, either solo or ensemble.  It's all for fun, so bring your favorite tunes and join in!  We'll announce a location once we've found the right place.

The Heat Is On: Summer Sizzle, September 25

The second annual Summer Sizzle Workshop, Competition and Annual General Meeting will be held on September 25, 2010, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Farmers Branch, Texas. We are pleased to announce that our judges/instructors will be James Bell, Chris Apps, and Jon Quigg. Also, Progressive Certification testing will be offered for those who apply to the EUSPBA to take the test.
